Ogle’s team of 15 recorded over 160,000 hours and completed almost 24,000 repair orders without an incident, setting a record for the most safe hours in any CRST shop. “We’re busy, and everything we do is on a deadline because there’s always a driver waiting on a truck. A truck not going down the road isn’t making any money,” said Ogle.
“I feel a lot of pride in the fact that our team cares, and safety is just part of our culture. We tell everyone, if you see something, you need to say something because accidents can happen in the blink of an eye.”
Ogle knows this firsthand. Before reaching this milestone, his shop was closing in on three-and-a-half years injury-free when an employee cut his finger. It was a minor injury that ended their streak due to a simple, rushed decision.
“The guy was cutting an air hose and grabbed a razor blade instead of the hose cutter,” Ogle explained. “The accident was very disappointing but a good reminder that using proper tools like a tubing cutter could have prevented this accident.”
In a terminal where 50 percent of their jobs require trucks to be on lifts with jack stands, safety is serious business. Celebrating this milestone was equally important, with steak, shrimp, baked potatoes, and, of course, cake on the menu.
“The VP and the director joined us to recognize the team, and that was important for the guys,” Ogle added. “When everyone is on the same page and following procedures, nobody gets hurt, and that’s always our goal.”
